Back and Forth to Dr Bains in Tyler, TX

April 30, 2004,  Friday

Back to Tyler for clearing out the fog in Jerry’s right eye (YAG laser for Opacified Capsule ).

Day started out with sprinkles and clouds. By afternoon, it was beautiful, warm, and sunny.

Back to Tyler in a heavy downpour. Lazer surgery done today.

Campground is empty, we are the only ones, except for a few regulars. Finally, the tank monitor was down to one light for a short while! Cannot get a signal with my Verizon service and Mobile Office. Very unpredictable as to when it will get a signal.

Back to Dr. Bains, the retina specialist in Tyler,  to examine the gas bubble in Jerry’s eye. It was 3 bubbles, so need to wait until tomorrow when it is only one big bubble! Tyler is 40 miles from Athens. These visits are taking most of the day.

In the evening, went for a  drove down one side of Lake Athens, which also borders the Fish Hatchery. Houses and yards are spectacular.

 April 27, 2004,  Tuesday

Jerry has to go to Tyler to eye doctor. Jerry had a detached retina in his left eye and had emergency surgery. They injected a gas bubble into his eye which pushes the retinal tear closed against the back wall of the eye. Then they will do lazer repair. Guess we will be extending our stay a week more. We are getting to know route 31 to Tyler and the loop road, 317, around Athens.

Big fish tournament at the lake tonight – about 50 boat trailers around. The boats rushed out at 6PM and most came back by 9PM. When anyone had a fish over 21 inches, they brought it in to measure and enter into contest, then went back and released the fish.

Waiting in Athens for Honda

April 26, 2004 Monday

Breakfast with Paul at his kid’s restaurant, Backside Café before he returned to Florida.

Drove to Tyler on rte 31. Visited Tyler Municipal Rose Garden, which features over 38,000 rose bushes of 500 varieties. Favorites were Love & Peace (yellow and peach), Marilyn Monroe (a blond peach) and Opening Night (brilliant flaming red). Of course the Don Juan was as bright red, climbing and fragrant as ever. Being Texas, there was a Barbara Bush rose.

Next stop was the Caldwell Zoo.   This zoo has 2,000 kinds of wildlife in a natural habitat. Biggest elephant in captivity, white and black long haired monkeys with the coloring of a skunk, jacquar (one spotted and one black, the ranger said the black one would be spotted when in the sun), an ocelot that came out of hiding, roared at us, and returned to the caves.   The park attendents were very helpful in getting Jerry access into the park and helping with a wheelchair - it was too hilly for me to push him, so we had a ranger escort.

On the way back to Athens,  Jerry notices that he can not see.

Clean up day around the RV. Dinner at local steak house.

April 24, 2004 Saturday

Paul from Gold Club in  FL is here in Athens at his kid's ranch. Last night we all went to a Crawdad bake (crawfish flown in from LA). What a treat to be at the ranch, meet the family, and to have crawfish that we had seen being harvested in LA.
